The Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden was created to house some of the most diverse plants found around the world. It has served as sanctuary in the midst of Los Angeles, preserving rare plant species often hardly seen in the wild. These plants have aided in plant research on campus and have also promoted awareness and appreciation for the plant society. Within these gardens, contains plant ecosystems from regions around the world. The Hawaiian region is of particular importance because it is the second most populous place of native Hawaiian vegetation behind Hawaii itself.
